PRODUCTION NEWS
AUGUST 2008
Was lucky enough to record the living legend that is Daevid Allen. This involved a session of poetry and 3 sessions
from his band University of Errors. The band sessions were of original material and reworkings of old Soft Machine and
Gong songs. Daevid was of course a founder member of both bands.
Also recorded a new experimental rock trio called Whale Oil, an extraordinarily charismatic Ukranian folk singer called
Zub and a drone bigband called LYSN (led by Hilary Jeffrey).
Mixed and mastered a CD from Brazilian metalists Seita. The CD will be called "Imprint Forever"...(I think!)
Also mixed 7 songs from the Scott Rollins solo CD.. so far, so good..
Mastering highlights included a CD single for Broken Beat DJ C.O.N.E, a CD single for Friesian rock band "Xigatze", a CD
from a new soul/jazz band called Leslie Nielsen, a CD called "Gallopardo" from Serbian Noise band Kiklop, a solo CD from
Vladimir Rakic (who also plays in Kiklop) and an absolutely amazing compilation CD of Afro Colombian music. It will be
titled "Pacifico Colombiano" and will come out on Otrabanda Records. Buy it immediately!
JANUARY 2008
Farida Merville's CD is now finished! It's called "Question Mark".We're both very pleased with how it came out.
Just the right mixture of old school meets new. Additional musicians:
Marius Beets - double bass, Maureen Fernandes - backing vocals, Jimmy Karakucivic, Ulrich de Jesus, Nico Olcers - guitar,
Mikel Foendoe - fender rhodes, Alex Bapula, Jeffrey Patty - percussion, Fred Holman, Glenn Gadum - synth,
Rob van de Wouw, Mate Guzelf - trumpet, Howard Sie, Efraim Trujillo, Konstantin Klastorni, Miek Miek van Rooij - saxophones.
Mixing was done at Berry Goedeman's new place which is now called "Sonic Playground".
Mastering was done at my own "Studio 5".
Producing the whole thing was quite an undertaking and took a good few months to realize.
Any cracks in time were used to further produce Scott Rollins. We added some kora (Albert Distelbrink),
some more accordian and Hammond (Jaap Somsen) and Scott himself put in some percussion while his sister Megan gave some backing voices.
I have to admit to having dug out the telecaster and playing some slide guitar myself.
Mastered the new CD "Sounds of an empty gun" from Brazilian metalists Retturn.
Other mastering jobs included a couple of broken beats CD's (C.O.N.E and Flowriders), some world music compilations
(Beyond magazine and World Music Forum... which went to Womex) and a bunch of stuff for the label "World Connection"
(including a Portugese sampler and tracks for Neco Novellas)
Sega Sidibe's CD (see entry for September 2006) is released on PXP records and is called "Njaga".
PXP is run by a pal of mine: Rutger van der Ree (Hi Rutger!!!)
The amazing gig that I was lucky enough to record in 2006 from Paul Dunmall and friends is also released.
It's a 2 volume CD set called "High Birds" on the DUNS label. It's wickedissimo!
JUNE 2007
Most of the basic recordings and overdubs are done for Farida Merville.
We did it mainly at Studio Het Smederij in Zeist.
We had Dennis "Big Foot" Breidell and Gregory Pataca on drums,
Leon Coenjaarts and Louis Drente on Bass,
Rob Mostert on a really great Hammond B3 and Yamaha grand piano,
Patrick Drabbe on fender rhodes and guitar, Kweku Mensah
and Wolf Martini on guitar.
Thanks to Florus de Graaf who helped engineer some of the backing vocals.
There are more overdubs to be done, but the CD now has a shape!
Mixed a CD for the Philidelphia based DV Nikt. Kind of rushed because of his schedule,
but we did the album in 5 days...I think it came out okay.
Recorded drummer Michael Baird in Den Haag as overdubs for the
Scott Rollins session.
Did FOH for some gigs with Atongo Zimba (ICC in Gent, 2 shows for liberation day
in Holland ( May 5th): Wageningen and Leeuwaarden, also the "Soul of Africa" festival in Pfingsten, Switzerland).
Mastered the Sandow CD, which will be called "Kiong-Gefährten der Liebe".
Other mastering jobs included a compilation CD for the first edition of the newly launched world music magazine
"Beyond" and a mix CD from MPS Pilot associated
with "Festival Mundial", also the second solo trombone CD for Hilary Jeffrey
(we turned back time and used a Roland space echo for one of the songs!)
JANUARY 2007
Did 2 mastering jobs for Otrabanda records: "Jungle funk" dance remixes of a 70's track that i had previously mixed
for Kofi Ayivor's CD "Rhythmology". these were created by Streamer and mps PILOT. Also mastered "Bokoor Beats" a compilation
of 70's and 80's Afrobeat, recorded by John Collins in Ghana.
Mastered a CD single from Louisa Lilani and John Prop.
Also did some mastering for Berry Goedemans...Berry has an amazing mixing studio with custom built mix desk and
all the vintage gear you could possibly want. I'm definitely going to bring some of my projects to him for mixing.
My friend ZAP invited me to Berlin for a week to mix a bunch of tracks for the east german band Sandow.
Didn't see much daylight..working, sleeping, working scenario..still, it was nice to be in his studio again after 10 years!
Overdubs well on the way for the Scott Rollins solo CD, we recorded some excellent percussion (Yuchi Cordoba,
Maarten van Aalst), accordion (Jaap Somsen) and bass guitar (Bob Biddiscombe).
Starting a production with Farida Merville. She is blending Jazz, Afro, RnB and House in quite an original way.
At the moment we have decided on the songs to record and are checking out which lucky studio to bring her homies to!
Maarten Derksen from Studio Hilversum phoned to ask if i'd be interested to do mastering at their place.
Man! It's so well designed and equipped! Spacious and accurate room, giant PMC 5.1 monitors, Weiss, Prism, Apogee,
Millenia, Avalon etc,etc... Aaarrrggghhhh...One of the first things i did there involved an African recording which i'd
already listened to on different systems. For the first time i could hear in the background rain hitting the corrugated iron
roof of the studio where it was recorded. Yes!!
SEPTEMBER 2006
So much happening over the summer that i didn't really have time to update.
In brief, became permanent live sound engineer for Atongo Zimba.
He and his band play a very cool Ghanaian Afro beat. We played something like 15 gigs around Benelux, doing the major world music festivals.
Most memorable gigs for me were the Music meeting festival in Nijmegen and the Oeral festival in Terschelling.
Also became permanent soundman for the salsa band Libra. Quite a few gigs over the summer, the best being in Zaandam
where we played outside for the public after their yearly marathon race. A lot of people!
More live engineering for WORM: Gang Gang Dance, Donna Parker, Ovo.
Ovo rule! I actually played with them the day after in OCCI, where i also did sound for
a hardcore festival with amongst others the AMAZING Tigers from England.
Did the Bluenote Jazz Festival in Rotterdam with Jazzjuice
and some festival in Edam with Electro Coco. Both these bands involve an old friend of mine: Alain Eskinasi
Studio work: Finally got a workable high quality system to mix and master at home..(it helps keep costs down for the clients).
Mixed and mastered an album by the Senegalese drummer Sega Sidibe.
Made a start at producing a solo album for Scott Rollins...we've put down the basic tracks and are now in overdub stage.
Completed a podcast for Otrabanda records. It's an interview with John Collins including various tracks from the label's releases.
Recorded a great set from the wonderful Paul Dunmall. King of saxophone players!!
He played in various combinations with Rozemarie Heggens, Alan Purves and Hilary Jeffrey.
And did a bunch of other stuff...
MARCH 2006
Recorded, mixed and mastered a solo harp CD by Jenny van Tol.
Classical music from dudes like Prokofiev, Glinka, Tchaikovsky,Flothuis. Great session... and it was a pleasure to share
her mum's sandwiches! Highlight was a recording premiere of a piece by Carlos Salzedo called "Jeux d'eau".
The boss from world music label Hippo records kindly asked if i'd like to become the
house engineer for his label, then went on to discuss the logistics of going to Kenya to record one of his artists....(as if i'd
say "no", Rob!).
Did a location recording of the salsa band Libra. On this occasion soul singer Eddy C
was a guest vocalist and the band performed a good few of his songs...so, more funk and soul than they usually play.
Started work on restoring some old vinyl recordings of song adaptations from the Dutch avantgarde poet Paul van Ostaijen.
Snap, crackle and pop! The resulting CD will be included in a book publication of his works (Bridges Books).
FEBRUARY 2006
Mastered the Antillian singer Pierre Lauffer junior. His CD
"Pierre sings Pierre" is a collection of his father's poems
and songs taken from various studio and live locations. He'll be bringing it out on a local Antillian label.
Did some recording and mixing for Turkish composer Selim Dogru. We worked
on a kind of cross over traditional Turkish / Western pop song which will be sent to 700 schools around Holland and
used for teaching purposes.
The ney part was recorded in Turkey while we were busy recording the other instruments
in Amsterdam. It was sent to us through internet, ready to slot in during the mix. Sometimes internet rules!
My friend Grrrt, who is house engineer for the WORM
in Rotterdam, asked if i'd fill in for a couple of nights while he was away. So, did a graveyard shift (3pm until 7 am next morning)
during a japanese techno noise party. Highlights for me were Gulpepsh who did it all with just voice
and a mic and the Masonna meets Lenny D sounds of Maruosa.
Also engineered a one off session from Bob Ostertag. He was trying out a computer games
console to give real time control of his sampler parameters. He rocked....of course!
We travelled back to Amsterdam together with Joel Ryan and ended up locked in the train...
3 am with only an intoxicated glue sniffer to help quell the tides of panic!
JANUARY 2006
The Live recording of Oswin "Chin" Behilia
is selling well and getting great reviews.
Chin's label boss Scott
Rollins (Otrabanda Records) plans to release a Second
compilation of Historical African recordings
from John Collins which I'll be mastering.
Tomas Andersen will release the recordings
we made of the Robert Rook Trio. We shall
go into Tapeless Studio this month to put
some finishing touches to some of the mixes. Robert
Rook rules! He is a fantastic piano player... I hope he comes to
a venue near you!!!
My old Brazilian friends
Retturn have recorded their latest album and have kindly asked
me to mix it for them. May Satan be with us!
After hearing the production of the Raxinasky
album "Transport de viandes" (Amanita
records) another Belgian band have made contact for recordings.
This band is called Mose and they sound great!
A concentrated and compact form of doomy metal.
